Detailed Analysis of Acts 8:26-40
As I read
this passage, the main point that comes to my mind concerning this story is how
the
The
Holy Spirit led Philip to the Ethiopian Eunuch. The Ethiopian Eunuch was
obviously already.
being drawn because he would not be studying the Scriptures if he were not being
drawn. As 1
Corinthians 2:14 tells us,
“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for
they are
foolishness to him; nor can he know them because they are spiritually
discerned”
I take this scripture to be talking about the unregenerate man’s heart.
Unregenerate men and
women have absolutely no interest in the things of God. So, the very fact that
this Eunuch was
found reading Scripture proves that the Lord was leading him. I think this
point is made even.
more clear from the words of our Lord in John 6:44, when He clearly says,
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will
raise him.
up at the last day”
There are many more verses that I can quote to make this point even further,
but I think I made
my point is clear enough. I believe that the Ethiopian Eunuch was being led by the
Holy Spirit and
God used Philip to meet him where he was to share the Good News of
Jesus Christ
with this man. God could have magically zapped the Eunuch to make him believe,
but instead
The Lord used the ordinary means of using a message from another human being to
change this
man’s heart and make him more susceptible to being changed by the Gospel.
I admit that thinking of a way to summarize this passage into one sentence, incorporating the entire theme of the passage, has been very difficult for me. However,
as a think on this passage, one sentence does stand out to me: “The Holy
Spirit draws the
Gentiles into the New Covenant via the ordinary means of the preached Gospel”.
I believe
This is the focal point of this passage because this is when the apostles began
to realize that the
The
Lord intended for even the Gentiles to become saved via the Gospel. As I said
earlier, God could
have magically zap the Gentile peoples and make them saved, but the Lord
desires to use His
people to work alongside Him to preach the ordinary message of the cross and
resurrection to
bring elect Gentiles into salvation. As the Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians
1:18,
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but
to us who are
being saved, it is the power of God”
What Paul is saying in this text is that our message to both Jews and
Greeks is foolishness to
Those who are not elected. Jews want to see miracles, and Gentiles chase after
worldly wisdom.
However, we preach the ordinary message about a man who died for us and was
raised from the
dead. This message is folly to both Jews and Gentiles who are not being saved.
This is why Paul
goes on to say in 1 Corinthians 1:21,
“For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God,
it pleased.
God, through the foolishness of the message preached, did to save those who believed”
The Apostle Paul is saying here that while Gentiles and Jews are searching
for God through either miracles or worldly wisdom, the Lord is more than willing to reach His
own people
through the foolishness of the preached Gospel.
As I contemplate how Luke’s audience would have responded to this main point,
the only thing
That I can think of is that his audience would have mixed feelings concerning
this passage.
Luke’s Gentile audience would have rejoiced over the fact that the Lord is
including Gentiles
into the New Covenant salvation. These people would immediately start praising
God when
They read this passage. Now, assuming that any Jews were reading Luke’s
account, they
may be feeling a little bit more reluctant to accept this testimony. I say this
because the Jewish
people for so many years always thought of themselves as God’s only chosen
people. Now, these
Jews have to accept that Gentiles, who have always been rejected by God, are
now all of a
Suddenly chosen by the same God, while now the Lord is rejecting any Jewish
people who do not
accept Jesus as their Messiah. This must have been a hard pill for the Jewish
people, who were
reading this passage from Luke. However, if these Jews are of the elect of God,
then they would
eventually realize that the Lord is completing an amazing work of salvation
that welcomes all
kinds of people into His salvation. These Christian Jews would then welcome
their Gentile
brothers and sisters into the family of God with open arms, because then they
would realize the
reality of the Gospel, tearing down all racial, gender, and socioeconomic
boundaries. This really is
is an amazing story told by God through His followers!
